Birdie on 18 seals Morikawa’s victory over top competitors.
Scottie Scheffler posted a 9-under 63 in the final round.
Collin Morikawa had to play a near-perfect round to take the trophy from the current number one player in the world, and he answered the call with a 5-under 67 on Sunday, finishing the tournament at 22-under and securing the win.
“We’re actually expecting (a baby) later this year, in a few months, and we just started telling people this week,” Morikawa revealed on CBS. “We said, ‘What a better way, the best way to announce it to the world if I was able to come out and win?’
He continued.
“There’s so much to life, there’s so much to enjoy. I’m hard on myself. I’m just so thankful for the people around me,” he said, wiping away tears.
Morikawa wouldn’t have had a chance if it weren’t for the 10-under 62 he carded in round 3. He needed to birdie the last hole to jump one ahead of the co-leader, Min Woo Lee.
On 18, Morikawa was forced to wait on the tee box. Then, he waited again, this time even longer in the fairway before watching his playing partner, … Bridgeman, hook one into the rocks on the left side.
Morikawa wasted no time when the green cleared to make a statement. He hit his approach shot to the right side of the green and then rolled his lag putt to within a foot.
With a simple tap-in birdie, Morikawa secured his first PGA Tour victory since 2023. What greater way to celebrate a new addition to the family?
