Final Round Drama Defines 154th Open Championship

(19^th READ) – Ryan Fox captured the 2026 Open Championship on Sunday at Royal Birkdale Golf Club, securing the Claret Jug after a dramatic final round at golf’s oldest major championship.

The 154th playing of The Open, which returned to Royal Birkdale, a course known for its demanding layout, crazy coastal conditions and championship history, for the first time since 2017, brought the world’s top golfers to the Southport, England.

The course was insanely hard, making it almost impossible to score. The tournament featured a mix of major champions, rising stars and international contenders battling through four rounds of links golf where wind, firm conditions and strategic shot-making made things difficult.

Fox entered the final round in contention and separated from the field with a strong performance, earning victory while joining an amazing list of players who have lifted the Claret Jug. The victory adds another milestone to Ryan Fox’s career and marks his biggest accomplishment in professional golf.

Royal Birkdale has hosted The Open 11 times, with past champions including some of the sport’s greatest names. The course previously crowned champions such as:

• Lee Trevino Johnny Miller
• Tom Watson
• Jordan Spieth.

Fox has won two PGA Tour events, both coming in 2025. He won the 2025 RBC Canadian Open and the 2025 ONEflight Myrtle Beach Classic. After making the cut on Friday, the New Zealander went on to shoot 62, 68 on Saturday and Sunday.

The 2026 Open Championship always highlights the challenge that is links golf, where creativity, patience and adaptability are as paramount as power and distance.
